WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING?

  • Our "New England" style contra dancing, also called "barn dancing" is highly aerobic and lots of fun. A friend of mine calls it "full contact aerobics".

  • We dance to LlVE music, generally Irish fiddle tunes or "old timey" music.

  • We have a caller for the dances.

  • You dance with a partner but you don't need to bring a partner with you to the dance. You will find people to dance with there. It is a Contra tradition that men ask women and women ask men to dance. It is another tradition to change partners after each dance.

  • We have a wide variety of ages and levels of experience. All are welcome. Experienced dancers help new dancers and we all help each other.

  • To make new dancers more comfortable, there is an optional teaching session before dances.

  • Contra dances are generally held in smoke and alcohol free environments such as Community centers, churches, or gymnasiums.

  • As far as dress goes, wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for cool comfort! This dancing is WARM business!

  • The main rule in Contra Dancing is to have FUN in this warm, inviting folk Community.
