WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING?

-
Our "New England" style contra dancing, also called "barn dancing"
is highly aerobic and lots of fun. A friend of mine calls it "full contact aerobics".
- We dance to LlVE music, generally Irish fiddle tunes or "old timey" music.
- We have a caller for the dances.
- You dance with a partner but you don't need to bring a partner with you
to the dance. You will find people to dance with there. It is a Contra
tradition that men ask women and women ask men to dance. It is another
tradition to change partners after each dance.
- We have a wide variety of ages and levels of experience.
All are welcome. Experienced dancers help new dancers and we all help each other.
- To make new dancers more comfortable, there is an optional teaching session before dances.
- Contra dances are generally held in smoke and alcohol free environments
such as Community centers, churches, or gymnasiums.
- As far as dress goes, wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for cool comfort! This dancing is WARM business!
- The main rule in Contra Dancing is to have FUN in this warm, inviting
folk Community.
